McGill Cash Register, Patent Office Model from 1886.

One of the best lessons my mom every taught me was this: No matter how much debt you have, whether it’s $0 or a lot, do your best to keep your credit spotless. Always pay your bills on time, only take on financial responsibilities you can handle, etc. That kind of thing.

Though we don’t make much money, my credit is very good (technically “exceptional”). This gives me/us options. It allows us to pay for things in creative ways. It allows us to take care of our needs. It convinces companies that we will pay our bills. Because we do.
