Year of Being 50: Day 328: Losing Time in History
It took until college, but I love, love, love history.
In addition to family history and genealogy, I really and truly adore history in general, especially American history, especially social history. I am not entirely sure why I don’t allow myself to spend more time with it, with the many books I’ve collected over the years, and the ones I inherited from my grandmother (including the entire Will Durant series).
Maybe it’s because I do lose so much time when I spend it with history that I don’t do it more often. Because things need to get done around here and considerably less would get done if I disappeared. Or maybe because I wouldn’t want to be interrupted, so I only do it when the chances of that are low.
In any case, I’d love to spend more time with my amateur history research. This is probably why I keep fantasizing about getting a Master’s in it, because that would give me permission to spend time with it. But a lot of people with higher degrees in the humanities have said it’s probably not worth the expense, and to just learn things on my own. Which I will continue to do. But I need to give myself permission first, it seems.
