As a kid, I was scared of pain, needles, anything like that. Like, kicking and screaming scared. So there was no way I was going to voluntarily do something like pierce my ears. I mean.. no way.

But by the time I got to be about 19, I decided I wanted pierced ears. So I went down to the piercing place at the mall and had it done (with a piercing gun, unfortunately, because that’s how it was done back then). A couple of years later, I decided to get a second set of holes because I liked the way double piercings looked.

But that second set was never to be. They had done a bad job, and the holes never properly healed. I eventually let them close up.

Fast forward about 25 years (to this past week) and I decided it was time for re-piercings.

Kid #1 recently decided she wanted her ears pierced, and I’d wanted re-piercings for years, and Rory has also wanted second holes in his ears, so we did a family trip to a local piercing place (no piercing guns in sight) on Friday.

I was quite anxious about it from the time we decided to do it until we actually did it. I almost chickened out a couple of times. So, I made sure to go first when we got there, so I could get it over with.

Yes, it hurt. Yes, I bled (one ear, at least… the other was a non-event). Yes, it was really unpleasant in general. But the guy who did it was great. His name was Lucky and he had a Laverne and Shirley-style L near his left eye. He answered all of my questions and accommodated all my needs and tolerated my anxious chattiness.

And I did it. I’m proud of myself for going through with it.

I loved that we got to pick the earrings they used, and that they had so many choices. I chose clear “diamond” star shapes. They’re cute. And unlike bridesmaid dresses, I’ll be able to wear them again.

Now, I just need to keep them clean for a few weeks.
