“Garden Window” by Alice Pike Barney

It takes a lot of time and effort to just continue to exist. I swear, half of life is life maintenance. Doing things to keep things going. Like cooking, eating, cleaning, laundry, exercise, health care, organizing, paying bills, errands, child rearing, having a job to pay for your existence… All of this just to maintain a status quo. Sure, you can make certain choices that will advance things in small ways, like if you want to eat healthier, but mostly your efforts in these categories are just keeping you where you are.

To be able to advance in any part of your life, you have to squeeze things in at other times of the day or week. In between paying work. In between being there for others. In between taking care of your and your family’s basic needs.

Not that there isn’t joy and satisfaction to be had in many of these life maintenance tasks (especially eating and child rearing, from my experience), but unless you’re the type to outsource much of this to others, the top bits of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs get a bit neglected.
