Year of Being 50: Day 318: What’s My Drawing Style?
So, when you’re trying to make art, especially art for sale in some fashion, it’s often an advantage to have a “look” or “style” where people can look at something you made and know it was yours. And that way they can also know what to expect from what you make in the future.
But, I’m cursed (blessed?) with the trait that my tastes lie all over the map, and when I make art, various styles present themselves. I suppose there is a style that shows up the most, but it doesn’t strike me as one people would be very interested in. I will try, though, and also create other styles that I like, and see what sticks. Both in my creation process, and in what people give attention to.
It’s hard to not just want to re-create what others have done, but it’s important to avoid that. Because, one, copyright, and two, they’ve already done it. They’ve carved out their corner of the art world. If someone wants that style, they’re the best ones to go to for that. I have to figure out what I’m best at, what people might come to me for, what I enjoy making and looking at.
I’m most definitely still figuring it out, and I’m sure I’ll try the shotgun approach for a while, just creating images that I like to make, that I like to look at, and see what other people are drawn to.
But, as that kid who never knew what to draw, who always drew the same stuff over and over (basic house, 1/4 of a sun in the corner, some flowers maybe, grass on the ground), I’m struggling to nail down a style.
