There are a bunch of things we look forward to doing once we own a house that we haven’t been able to do or have chosen not to do as renters.

1. Have a garden. Not a massive garden, not an obsessive garden, but somewhere we can grow beans and peas and flowers and other pollinator attractors. And then we can teach any grandkids that might exist in the future how to eat veggies out of the garden. This will all be easier if/when we move somewhere where it rains more frequently.

2. Have color on the walls. Paint them something other than white or off-white. Maybe some red. Or blue. Or have wainscotting or beadboard. Or, gasp, a backsplash.

3. Create welcoming outdoor spaces. I love being outside, but dislike too much sun, any bugs, or neighbors looking in. So I will want to have a nice screened porch, and also somewhere outside with plenty of anti-mosquito plants, shade, and comfortable seating.

4. Put up Christmas lights. During the Christmas season, we look forward to making the effort to hang lights and be a warm welcome home.

5. Choose our own appliances. If we hate the stove, or the fridge, or the washer, we’d be free to replace it.

6. Fence in our yard (see #3 above).

There are countless others, but those are the first ones that came to mind.
