Year of Being 50: Day 162: Putting Yourself in the Path of Opportunity
Sorry if I’ve already written on this topic, but it’s an important one.
I’ve found that one way to really get ahead in life—for jobs, work, friendships, learning opportunities, relationships—it’s vital to put yourself in the path of opportunity. Sometimes it’s impossible to find the specific thing you’re looking for, but if you spend time in spaces that what you’re looking for might turn up, all you have to do is keep your eyes open.
If you want to meet new people, start spending time in circles that might contain the kind of people you want to meet.
If you want to find new jobs or work, start getting involved in groups that include people in those industries.
If you want to learn about a topic, start following people on social media or subscribe to a newsletter where you’ll learn about that topic.
Make it easy to just “run into” the kinds of people or information you want in your life. Then participate. You might be surprised at what that gets you. (Just don’t forget to be nice to people.)
It often takes time for this strategy to bear fruit, but if you do it early and often, make it a habit, you’ll eventually have a regular supply of opportunities of all kinds. I’ve had success in all of these areas due to this practice. I highly recommend it.
