It’s Day #2 of Spoonflower’s 12 Days of Design Challenge! (Or, at least it is here in my world.)

After separating the wheat from the chaff of my gathered inspiration, or at least culling the things that might not make a good fabric, today’s Spoonflower task meant me picking a theme. The Spoonflower 12 Days of Design Challenge suggested creating a mood board. (And they suggest using Pinterest, which I find extremely clunky and not user-friendly.)

I’m not really great with mood boards, as they require you to pile on a bunch of things that can often seem unrelated. Finding a cohesive theme to pull all of the board items together can be tricky. I don’t want to make a board where I have to leave half the things behind because they don’t really work. But words work well for me on a “mood board” of sorts. So I went with that.

To narrow it down, I made a list of words that came to mind when I thought, “What kinds of images am I drawn toward?”

I’m drawn to so many different styles, so many different kinds of things, that I had to focus and pick a theme first, then decide which of my inspirations fit the theme.

I don’t really understand how they’ve organized Task #2, because it seems to be asking you to re-gather inspiration, which we did yesterday. So I ignored their words and took their spirit, and just organized some of the inspiration I had gathered yesterday. (Though they do link to the Pattern Curator site, though, which may or may not be helpful to you.) It was hard to narrow it down, but I comforted myself with the thought and knowledge that I could revisit the other ideas later.

After much thought, some sketching, and perusing my inspiration images, I decided on a theme. It’s cute. It’s a bit derivative. But I like it, and hope to style it all my own.

Spoonflower emphasizes that you should be authentic. Find your own style. It’s great to be inspired by others, but then establish your own take on the ideas. Finding my own personal style may be my biggest challenge here. But I’m trying.

Now, once you have a theme all picked out, hold tight: tomorrow addresses the color palette! (I’ve got my theme for this project all picked out. But, shhh, it’s a secret so far. You can see my ideas soon!)
