2023 is quickly dancing into the night.

I know the change of one year to another is fairly arbitrary, since everything in nature is continuous and cyclical and it doesn’t really matter when you end one cycle and start another. But since we are working with the calendar we have, I do like to think of January 1 as the start of a fresh year. It helps that it’s in winter (here in the northern hemisphere), which always feels fresher than summer or warmer months. Things are still (relatively) dormant, and it feels like a good time to clean the slate and prepare to make glorious new messes in the new year.

These last few days of the year, the ones after Christmas, are always a jumble, some of my favorite days of the year. Often too indulgent, but a great opportunity to pretend like calories don’t count and have a reminder of how crappy sugar makes me feel. This year these last several days have gotten far too filled up with appointments and errands and activities, though, and I haven’t been able to focus as much on my own needs. It’s tempting to take off of work next week, too, but I’m not sure I can justify that. We’ll see how far I get with my annual reflections and planning this week.
