One thousand people.

That’s apparently all it takes. One thousand people to buy everything that you do, in order to be able to support yourself on your creative endeavors.

At least, that’s what I remember Wil Wheaton writing at one point. (I can’t find a link. I read it years ago.) That you need one thousand people to buy everything you write/make/create, and then of course other additional people will sometimes buy it, and then you will have enough money to make a living at it, quit your day job, what have you.

Getting those thousand people, though… That’s the hard part. Getting beyond the dozen people around you who will buy everything you do, because they’re your mom, your kid, your best friend, or just someone on the internet who thinks you’re interesting.

I wish I had a marketing department. One that worked on commission.
