Year of Being 50: Day 55: Transported to Childhood #5: Schoolhouse Rock
I’m a lucky Gen-Xer, in that I grew up watching Schoolhouse Rock shorts on TV in between other things I was watching. I loved the songs. But I was pretty young when a lot of them were on. So I didn’t memorize too many of the songs, and for most of them it was just the chorus. But I still knew I loved them, so…
When my own kids were born, I was sure to get the Schoolhouse Rock DVD (Amazon tells me it was just a couple of months after Kid #2 was born). Now that Gen-Xers were having kids of their own, the stuff we loved as kids was being re-released so we could get it in new formats, either for ourselves or our kids. Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, and Schoolhouse Rock were among them. I made sure to get them all.
My own kids enjoyed the shows to varying levels (I’m not sure anyone matched my complete adoration of Pee-Wee’s Playhouse, which I watched in high school!), but Schoolhouse Rock stuck a little better than others, especially with Kid #2. He and I will still break into song sometimes, especially for the Preamble song.
Being able to share childhood favorites with my own kids has been priceless.
